Historian John D'Emilio Lectures on rights for LGBT people

SUMMARY: Historian John D’Emilio will be lecturing on how gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people still struggle with receiving equality in America. He will discuss the issues, while recognizing the past that brought LGBT people to where they are today.

LEAD PARAGRAPH: Historian John D’Emilio will discuss the 1950s gay movement and its impact. The lecture will take place Thursday, Feb 25. in the Black Cultural Center from 5-6 p.m.

• D’Emilio is a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he teaches history and gender and women’s studies.

• D’Emilio has published numerous articles and books including Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America and won awards such as the Brudner Prize from Yale University for lifetime contributions to gay and lesbian studies.

• The lecture will follow the opening of the new LGBTA Resource Center at 2:30 p.m. in Melrose F103.
